While the title, The Great Train Race, conjures visions of an action packed motion picture the truth is actually more exciting than fiction. In October of 1991, 51 cyclists including several European professionals raced Grand Canyon Railways (GCR’s) engine #18 from the Grand Canyon to Williams AZ. Engine 18 encountered several challenges including bad track and the race was never held again until 2015.
This years race pits a 300 ton steam engine against cyclists for 53 miles. Man Vs Machine will be a one day, one way road bike event that begins at the Grand Hotel in Tusayan, AZ near the edge of the Grand Canyon’s south rim and will travel 53 miles south to historic Williams, Arizona. Experience the rush of going head to head against a 1923 300 ton steam engine.
The race takes place September 24th, 2016 @ 10:30am – From the Grand Canyon to Route 66. For more details visit the website here.
